The Beauty of the Depths

Friday Dec 18, 2009

This was one activity that surprised me in Manila…..

Manila is not known for rich tourist attractions despite it’s cultural idiosyncrisies and diversities which are fascinating

The money is not there to spend on such things

But the government is realising the lucrative tourist market is waiting to be tapped and have built this surprising and beautiful Aquarium which focuses on the ecology of the Island’s rich tropical aquatic life…it is actually a National Park in the Philippines (the sea that is)

Fascinating and extremely stimulating

To my upset I only had a mobile phone camera…..but you get the idea anyway

The tunnel was my personal favourite!

Enjoy

There were literally hundreds of these smaller tanks with the BIGGEST specimen’s of tropical fish I have ever seen!

  • Exotic and beautiful!
  • Cheeky Boys

The BIG tanks chock full of amazing fish!

Look at Esther! These tanks are huge!

    Monster Fish!

This is for my dad giant Travali Fish (not sure of spelling)

Now I could have sat there for hours!! Amazing feeling!

The teen and preteen bored look, but I think they liked it!

You walked under this BIG tank filled with hundreds (literally) of stingrays of all sizes!!

Of Course the Aussie Sharks!! hundreds of them too!!!!

    It was a great day!!!!

    Passion

    Thursday Nov 26, 2009

I do not think we understand in the west the power of BELIEVING in God

The people here are simply passionate about God and real with their love and feelings

I just do not see this kind of love and prayer pouring out to God in our Sunday services but here in Baseco it is the norm

I have nothing that I can really teach these people they are teaching me!

Our House!! Simple but a Haven!!

    Thursday Oct 29, 2009

Our House In The Middle of Our Street…….I am a Madness Fan from years ago.

Well technically it is not OUR house but we are borrowing it from Mark and Chris, bless em

It is simple but a palace compared to the houses 5 min way……we have cool tiles, a shower, a toilet and one air conditioned room……bliss

We are ON TOP of each other, only 2 bedrooms BUT we have survived and adjusted after LOTS of attitude changes and give and take. Simple living, no TV, we have a computer and watch some videos but we are really doing it simple compared with home……..

I WILL NEVER COMPLAIN ABOUT MY GORGEOUS WOOD KITCHEN AGAIN!!!

Our kitchen, fridge and gas hot plates.....all important fan!

Sarah and Esther's room, only very small and fits bunkbeds that is all, Sarah stashed her posters and photos and decorated immediately!! The 4 boys are all in one room but they have air conditioner.....it does not have windows. Sarah has a window and a nice breeze.

    Countdown to Manila

    Tuesday Jul 7, 2009

3761597_blog7.5 WEEKS TO GO and COUNTING

So how do you get a family of 8 ready to go to a developing nation…..ummmmm

    You gotta start NOW……

    FLYING & TRAVEL

Thankfully the flying part  is easy peasy for the Troups now, after a 35 hour trip to Moscow

8 hours to Manila is not a drama.

Getting us to Baseco may prove a drama as we and luggage do not fit easily in a TAXI!3401300_blog

But my dear Christine is the organiser that end!! At the moment too hard for me!

Even the trip to the airport for us is a challenge…..8 people, 8 20kg bags (including a piano and maybe a wind generator……hmmmm) and 8 backpacks is a logistical problem too….last time we hired a bus and we still did not fit!!

    Anyway

    CLOTHING

    busy-mom-1

Clothes are a minimum, except for James’ jocks (private joke……actually the last time he was there he almost had enough to use everyday and NOT wash any…this was a source of amusement for all of my dear “Baseco-ians” who though I was being a worry wart bout hubby’s jocks (actually I think I was using them for padding around the piano))

We all need 7 tops and bottoms and underwear, one pair of jeans, thin  jumper and shoes to travel in….and maybe thongs…..maybe one “good” outfit for shopping.

    This is the easy part!!!

    SCHOOL

3321117_blogOhh my…..probably last on my wanna do list…..BUT

We are only taking Maths (copying the answer keys Rod & Staff thumper books) English thankfully very portable (LEM) , I am taking some Aussie novels for Aust Studies and the older chn will be taking some Science……I think the rest will be covered in life

    SOCIAL STUDIES  COVERED

    Mark in Baseco

Study of a new society and culture

    HEALTH COVERED

Our new home in Manila!!! The concrete one on the right

We will be living in a slum……no more to be said, we gotta live clean and healthy

Awareness of clean water, germs and more

    James in Manila

    HISTORY COVERED

I am hoping we can change some of these kids destiny, and make our own history (not in a big white Missionary come to save the day way) but just making a difference sort of way!

    MEDICINES & IMMUNIZATIONS

This is a bit more trickier……Travel doc was great no panic or fear just practical and pragmatic (my kinda Doc!!

    2548913_blog

    • K ids need to be up to date with Immunizations (esp tetnus etc)
    • They need to update their Hep A&B, which we had already for Russia
    • Use RID for Dengue Fever
    • Bottled water, even teeth, washing vegies etc etc
    • Rabies not essential as the immunoglobulin is the same globally

Medicines like Ventolin, specific pain killers, lots of Aquium, RID and more, First Aid Kit, Deep Heat…are all getting packed

    We worm before we go!

    4741827_blogCOMMUNICATION

We are as you know,  setting up blogs  for everyone to follow and the kids to write and vent during the weeks (like a diary) their blogs are on my links. Have a read and let them know you have been there by commenting, they love it!

SO THERE IS A GLIMPSE INTO THE  FLURRY and SCURRY

I will keep you updated with all of our Manila news and plans!

    Blessings Cath
